Project Read is...

  • the adult literacy program of San Mateo County Library.
  • a place to learn to read and write better.
  • a place to help someone change their life.
 

"1 out of 5 adults in the United States today cannot read, write, or use math well enough to function as a full member of society."

Who do we serve?

  • English speaking adults...
  • ages 16 or older...
  • who read below the 8th grade level.



Who are our tutors?

  • Volunteers who are willing to give 3 hours a week to help an adult learn to read.
  • Tutors must be 18 years or older and complete 12 hours of free training.
  • We ask tutors to commit 9 months to their learner.
Qualities we need in a tutor are:
  • patience
  • flexibility
  • thoughtfulness
  • a good sense of humor
 

East Palo Alto is comprised of hard working citizens who want very much to live in a world community that is supportive of raising families, pursuing dreams and participating more fully in society.

We at East Palo Alto Project Read are committed to helping our residents achieve their goals through greater literacy.
