You need to remove the old .rrd files and let Cricket re-create them
for you. Anytime you change the number of variables, you need to do
this.

With the advent of rrddump and rrdrestore, it should be possible to
dump an RRD, munge it to add a variable, then do a restore, thus
adding a variable without losing history.

But no one has done that yet... want to be first? :)
