This is actually how we do it at webtv. The subtree-sets file is in the
home directory, and as part of the upgrade procedure, I put a symlink in
the cricket directory to the file.

You can easily enough tell collect-subtrees to look in a different place
in your crontab, by using the -cf /path/to/subtree-sets option. Which
is another way to solve the same problem. The tradeoff between long
crontab lines or having to create an extra symlink is not one of the
most important decisions involving cricket. :-)
