For some reason grapher is complaining about generating the graphs with the following as output if you right click on the graphic and choose to view it:

I'm running Solaris 2.6 and have all the perl modules installed but did not update any when I upgraded from 0.69 to 0.70 (do I need to?).

I had a similar problem,
RRD 1.0.7, and Cricket 0.70 worked great on my test box. I installed both to the production box moved my configs and started getting the errors you mention. After much head pounding I found someone else had installed some earlier versions of RRD which didn't do PNG's and didn't have an -a option nuking them fixed my install.
Find the old RRD perl modules and remove or rename them and it should clear up for you. it did for me.
