I'm willing to bet that that line should be changed to:
        my($vname, $dss) = split(/\s*:\s*/, $v, 2);
I suspect it was a typo that the \s* was typed \*.

There is another point in the file which uses the form as I typed it above.

BTW, the line in question is at line 273.
